D-1. System Description and General Questions

Can you give me a brief description of the ADV6600?

Basically, the ADV6600 water quality monitor is the marriage of two instruments – SonTek’s
Argonaut Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), which measures water velocity (speed and
direction) and YSI’s 6-series of sondes, which measure water quality.

The appearance of the ADV6600 is similar to other YSI 6-series sondes. Additionally, both the 6-
series sondes and Doppler sensor function in a similar fashion to that of their “parent” instruments.

Along with the ADV sensor, the sonde can be equipped with conductivity/temperature, dissolved
oxygen, pH, pH/ORP, two optical sensors (turbidity, chlorophyll, and rhodamine WT), and two ion
selective electrodes (ammonium, nitrate, and chloride). The unit uses the same water quality probes
as the current 6-series sondes from YSI. Sensors from other 6-series sondes may be swapped with
those on the ADV6600. The ADV sensor is not removable and cannot be attached to other sondes.

A non-vented pressure (depth) sensor is available as an option with the instrument, and is available
in three sensor ranges (Shallow Water: 0-10 m, Mid-Depth: 0-30 m, and Deep-Water: 0-50 m).

What are the advantages of the ADV6600?

The ADV6600 allows the simultaneous measurement and recording of water velocity and water
quality parameters.

Having the water velocity and quality seamlessly integrated has the following key benefits.

• The data for all parameters is stored in a single data file.

• There are no integration issues with the single combined system.

• All parameters are recorded at the same time, rate, and from similar locations.

• The user is able to easily correlate changes in water quality parameters with the movement of

water.

• The ADV6600 is compact and lightweight.

• The power consumption of the ADV6600 is low, allowing for extended deployments from the

onboard power source.
