6-2. Real-time Data Collection

Real-time data collection is an application where data is recorded directly to an external computer.
This method of data collection may also be referred to as a spot sampling application. The user is
usually present and may observe readings as they are recorded. Before beginning a deployment,
make sure you have read and completed the procedures outlined in previous chapters of this manual,
including membrane installation, probe installation, firmware setup, calibration and diagnostics. Be
particularly careful that you have performed your dissolved oxygen calibration with Autosleep
RS232 deactivated in the Advanced|Setup menu associated with the water quality sensors as
described in Section 4.5.4 above.

1. Connect the ADV6600 to a computer.
2. Launch the ADVantage 6600 software.
3. Choose Connect to System. Verify the

COM setting and Baud Rate. Click on
Connect.

4. Click Change System Settings. The

Quick Setup dialog box, as shown at
the right, will appear.

5. Enter up to 5 characters for a file name.

Note that ONLY alpha-numeric
characters are allowed. The software
will automatically add the date
(YYMMDD) and time (HHMM) to
these 5 characters for a complete file
name that appears as such:
5char_YYMMDD_HHMM.a66

6. Add comments regarding the

deployment or data file, or leave blank.

7. Set the Averaging Interval and Sample

Interval in minutes – usually a value of
1 min is appropriate for spot sampling.

8. For most spot sampling studies, make

certain that the Velocity Range is set to
AUTO and that the coordinate system is set to ENU.

9. Set up the Enable Internal Recorder and Record to a file on this PC boxes according to

your needs. If both boxes are checked, data will be saved BOTH to internal sonde memory
and to the PC as describe above. Generally, the only reason NOT to save data to both
locations is that in very long real-time studies (days), the memory of the ADV6600 could
become filled. The main reason to check both boxes is to provide a backup of your real-
time data.

10. Click on Update. The settings will be saved and the Quick Setup window will disappear.
11. Choose the Start real-time data collection or begin regular deployment selection from

the Data Collection list. The data display screen shown below will appear and after a 60
