6-4. SDI-12 Data Collection

An SDI-12 data collection application is one in which the ADV6600 relays data to an external data
collection platform (DCP). In this application, the external DCP requests data from the sonde at
preset intervals. The DCP then logs the data in its own internal memory for later download or
remote transmission. Using this type of data collection, the user is not present when readings are
collected.

Before beginning a deployment, make sure you
have read and completed the procedures outlined
in previous chapters of this manual, including
membrane installation, probe installation, firmware
setup, calibration and diagnostics.

1. Connect the ADV6600 to a computer.
2. Launch the ADVantage 6600 software.
3. Choose Connect to System. Verify the

COM setting and Baud Rate. Click on
Connect.

4. Click Change System Settings. The

Quick Setup dialog box, as shown at the
right, will appear.

5. If you wish to log a “backup” data file to

the internal memory of the ADV6600
while also collecting data in the DCP,
enter a name for the file and make sure
that the Internal Recorder is enabled. Under these conditions, data will automatically be
logged to the ADV6600 at exactly the same time as it is logged to the DCP. The
ADV6600 file will be in ADVantage 6600 format and can be analyzed later using the
postprocessing power of this software.

6. Make certain that the Velocity Range is set to AUTO and the Coordinate System is set to

ENU.

7. Click on the Output Fields button to display the list of possible parameters which can be

output to your data collection platform or other SDI-12 device. Select the parameters to be
output by checking or unchecking the appropriate box. The specifications of your data
collection platform or its software may limit the number of parameters which can be
collected by the device. For example, for a YSI 6200 data collection platform running
EcoWatch DCP software, a maximum of 31 parameters can be handled. Consult your
DCP manual to determine if the number of parameters will be limited. After choosing
your parameters, click OK to return to the Quick Setup window.
