No. The released version of ADVantage 6600 has no data merging capabilities. However, the user is
able to merge files in a spreadsheet or other data analysis program. The ability to merge data files
may be incorporated into future versions of the software.

D-7. Calibration and Maintenance

Prior to a deployment, how can I be sure that I will collect valid ADV velocity data?

When connected to a computer through ADVantage 6600 software, you can easily perform a
qualitative “beam check” test. The test should be done in the environment in which the data will be
collected (i.e., the system should be deployed in the mount). It is strongly recommended that a
Beam Check be performed and recorded before and after each deployment (before cleaning or
changing the location of the ADV6600). This procedure is fairly quick, and the results can be either
printed or stored to a computer file for use in QC/QA programs. It is important to note that the
ability of YSI Technical Support personnel to aid in data analysis and troubleshooting will be
significantly compromised if a beam check file from the site is not available.

The beam check test will answer the following questions::
• Are there sufficient scatterers in the water to collect data.?

• Is the system operating correctly?

• Is the distance to the boundary (if present) sufficient.

• Are there obstructions within the sampling area?

If you cannot attach a cable to your instrument in the field, it is imperative that you at least perform
a beam check in the laboratory before taking your ADV6600 to the deployment site to assure the
Doppler system itself is functioning correctly.

After starting a study and logging data, can I calibrate sensors without stopping the study?

No. Unlike YSI 6-series products, the ADV6600 firmware automatically stops a logging study when
interaction is established via a computer running ADVantage 6600 software. This means that all
calibrations must take place before starting a logging study. After completing calibration of the
sensors, the study would need to be restarted (if the system will be left for further deployment).

Is periodic calibration of the ADV sensor by the user required?
