Using a dynamic disk configuration

Do not allocate a data file made up of multiple instances to a file system (drive) of a disk group
subject to backup and restoration.

Allocate the following directories and files to a file system (drive) of a disk group different from
the one to which data files (

*.mdf

and

*.ndf

) are allocated. If these directories and files are

allocated to a file system (drive) of the same disk group, an error will occur when backup is ex-
ecuted.
• Metafile storage directory (only if a VDI metafile storage directory was specified with the

drmsqlinit

command)

• Backup data of the transaction log

To allocate a file that is made up of multiple databases to a file system (drive) of the same disk
group, you must collectively back up and restore all the databases. If these requirements are not
met when performing Application Agent backup, backup processing terminates with an error.

To back up or restore databases individually, allocate database data files to a file system (drive)
of a different disk group.

Store

tempdb

in a file system (drive) of a disk group different from the one to which a user database

subject to backup belongs.
When the user database is restored if

tempdb

is stored in a file system (drive) of the same disk

group,

tempdb

is overwritten by the data restored from the secondary volume in the online state.

Then, the SQL Server goes into an abnormal state. In this case, restart the SQL Server to recreate

tempdb

and restore the server to a normal state. After restarting the SQL Server, specify a file

system (drive) different from the one to which a user database subject to backup belongs as a
destination in which

tempdb

is stored, and then re-execute restoration. Before re-executing restor-

ation, see “

SQL Server database requirements for executing commands

” on page 286 to check if

the database can properly be restored.
