Backing up and restoring dynamic disks by dynamically or statically recognizing secondary
volumes

Dynamically recognizing secondary volumes:

When Application Agent dynamically recognizes the secondary volume, the Demount Device
Warning message is output to the Windows event log.

Statically recognizing secondary volumes:

Do not rescan disk information with disk management, Veritas Enterprise Administrator, or the

diskpart

or

vxassist

command. A Foreign disk, Failed volume, or Missing disk appears,

making it impossible for Application Agent to recognize the disk configuration correctly. If there
is an application that is using the appropriate disk, an unexpected write error might occur.
If Application Agent is unable to recognize the disk configuration correctly, restore the disk con-
figuration in the following procedures. However, restoration of application data being executed
when disk information is being rescanned is not guaranteed.

Execute Import Foreign Disk Format for the Foreign disk with Disk Management.

Execute Reactivate Volume for the Failed volume. This mounts the file system and restores the
original configuration. HP recommends that you execute CHKDSK (disk check) for the restored
file system.

If you change a disk configuration on a physical disk (e.g., by volume expansion), update the
dictionary map files on the file server or database server, back up the files to a volume once as
in initial construction, and then restart the backup server. This enables the server to recognize the
secondary volume disk configuration correctly.

Expanding dynamic volumes

If you expand a dynamic volume, update the dictionary map files.

When you expand a dynamic volume, HP recommends that you do not expand it to a new phys-
ical disk that does not belong to the disk set. This expansion will cause multiple disk sets to join.
If you change a volume configuration such that multiple disk sets are joined, when restoring pre-
join data, you must return the dynamic disks to the basic disks, restore the disk set configuration
to the pre-join configuration, and then restore all pre-join disk sets.

Once you have expanded a dynamic volume, you cannot restore data backed up before the ex-
pansion. If you want to restore data backed up before expanding the dynamic volume, return the
volume configuration to the configuration that existed before the expansion and then update the
dictionary map files.

Precautions for partition styles for disks

After performing a backup, disk partition styles cannot be modified.
When replacing a disk, the same partition style that was in use at the time the backup was per-
formed must be applied to the disk.

If the partition style was changed after the backup was performed, and you execute the restore
command (

drmfsrestore

,

drmsqlrestore

, or

drmexgrestore

), or you execute the

drm-

devctl

command by specifying either the

-sigview

or

-sigset

option, the operation might

end with an error. In this case, change the partition style to the one that was in use when the
backup was performed.

When the backup target is being managed in a cluster configuration, the disk signatures for the
primary volume and secondary volume must be the same signatures when the backup was per-
