7.29. Remove the shim(s) from the left axle assembly.

See Figure 7.29.

7.30. Slowly remove the axle assembly from the right

housing. See Figure 7.30.

7.31. Remove the shim(s) from the right axle.

NOTE: These shims set the ring and pinion gear
backlash during assembly. Keep track of their
positions.

7.32. Remove the outer ball bearing from the right

axle housing. See Figure 7.32.

7.33. Check the drive pinion for axial and radial play.

NOTE: Axial play should be zero. Axial play
indicates loose or worn bearings.

NOTE: If the bearings are tight, radial play indi-
cates that the drive pinion is loose in the inner
races of the bearings, or that the outer races of
the bearings are loose in the housing. If axial or
radial play exist, identify and repair the source of
play.

7.34. Raise the staked portion of the stake nut, secur-

ing the pinion gear assembly, using a small
chisel. See Figure 7.34.
