7264 Four Wheel Drive Axle Assembly Removal and Disassembly

6 - 120

8.4.

Assemble the drive pinion. See Figure 8.4.

NOTE: Make an educated guess as to the quan-
tity and size of the shims that will be necessary.

8.5.

Temporarily install drive pinion and bearing
assemble in the axle housing. See Figure 8.5.

NOTE: Omit the seal and O-ring on initial fitting

NOTE: Tighten the nut until bearing play is elimi-
nated, but do not over-tighten.

NOTE: A new pinion nut should be used for final
assembly. The stake flange on the nut should
only be staked one time at any spot around its
circumference.

8.6.

Fixture the right axle housing in a vise so that
the back side of the ring gear will face up when
the axles and differential are installed.

8.7.

Install shims into the base of the bearing bore in
the right axle housing. See Figure 8.7.

NOTE: Make an educated guess as to the size
and quantity of shims required.

8.8.

Apply prussian blue to the teeth of the ring gear
and pinion gear.

8.9.

Place the differential and axles into the right axle
housing. See Figure 8.9.

NOTE: Keep the axles slightly off of a vertical
plane until the outboard bearing on the right axle
shaft seats into its bore in the axle housing. This
will create a slight angular load on the bearings,
binding them into the bores in the differential
housing. Otherwise the axles and differential
may not stay together as they are installed.
