9.

INSTALLING THE FRONT DRIVE AXLE

9.1.

Position the front drive axle under the tractor in
the correct orientation for installation.

9.2.

If the front bearing holder has been disassem-
bled, assemble it by reversing steps used for
disassembly. Do not install the grease fitting at
this point.

9.3.

If the rear bearing holder has been disassem-
bled, assemble it by reversing steps used for
disassembly. Do not install the grease fitting at
this point.

9.4.

Lubricate the contact surfaces on the front bear-
ing holder.

9.5.

Lubricate the contact surfaces on the rear bear-
ing holder.

9.6.

Install the front bearing holder on the axle.

9.7.

Install the rear bearing holder on the axle.
See Figure 9.7.

9.8.

Raise the front axle using a hydraulic jack, and
position it so that the bolt holes in the bearing
holders align with the bolt holes in the axle
brackets on the tractor.

9.9.

Install the nuts and bolts that hold the front and
rear bearing holders to the front and rear axle
brackets.

9.10. Tighten the bolts to the front axle bracket using a

3/4” wrench.

9.11. Slide the front drive shaft forward to connect the

universal joint to the front axle. See Figure 9.11.

NOTE: Do not force the universal joint against
the pinion seal. Push the drive shaft forward
until contact is felt, then draw it back roughly 1/4”
(.5cm).

9.12. Tighten the set screw that secures the rear uni-

versal joint on the front drive shaft to the splined
shaft on the front of the transmission using a
5/32” allen wrench.

9.13. Remove the hydraulic jack.

9.14. Install a new O-ring on each axle housing flange

boss.

9.15. Install the bevel gears on the end of each axle.
