7264 Four Wheel Drive Axle Assembly Removal and Disassembly

6 - 119

NOTE: When inspecting the axle assemblies,
examine the following items:

• Check the condition of the splines.

• Check the bearings for discoloration, loose-

ness and smooth rotation.

• Check the bearing contact surfaces for irregu-

larities.

7.66. Replace any worn or damaged components, and

assemble the differential by reversing the disas-
sembly procedure.

8.

DIFFERENTIAL SET-UP

8.1.

Assemble each axle shaft by reversing the pro-
cedures previously used to remove the bearings
and spacers.

8.2.

Insert the left and right axle shafts into the differ-
ential assembly. See Figure 8.2.

NOTE: The inboard spline of each axle shaft will
engage it’s differential gear as the axle shaft is
installed.

NOTE: The spring pin will seat into holes on the
inboard end of each axle shaft as they are
installed.

NOTE: The inboard bearing on the right axle
shaft will seat into the bottom of the bore in the
differential housing.

NOTE: The inboard bearing on the left axle shaft
will seat up to the snap ring that locks into a
groove in the outer race of the bearing.

8.3.

Tighten the ring gear bolts to a torque of 22.6-
28.4 ft-lbs. (23-29 N.m) in a cross-pattern. See
Figure 8.3.

NOTE: If lock washers or locking tabs were not
initially present, thread locking compound such
as Loctite 262 should be applied sparingly tot he
threads prior to assembly.

NOTE: If thread locking compound is used,
tighten bolts to the lower end of the torque
range. Thread locking compound acts as a lubri-
cant, and will cause a pessimistic torque wrench
action.

NOTE: If the ring and pinion gears have not
been replaced
, the pinion drag must be set, but
the original shims that were used to set backlash
and tooth contact should be reused.

NOTE: If the ring and pinion gears have been
replaced
, the pinion drag must be set, and the
backlash and tooth contact must be adjusted
using shims.
