7264 Four Wheel Drive Axle Assembly Removal and Disassembly

6 - 118

7.60. Remove the spring pin from the pinion shaft

using a flat nosed 3/16” drift and hammer.
See Figure 7.60.

7.61. Slide the pinion shaft out of the differential hous-

ing.

7.62. Remove both pinion gears and cupped thrust

washers.

7.63. Thoroughly clean and inspect the pinion shaft,

differential gears, and differential housing.
See Figure 7.63.

• The thrust washers should not exhibit any sur-

face irregularities or radial cracks.

• The standard thickness of the thrust washers

is .039” (1.0mm). If worn to less than .027”
(.7mm) replace the thrust washer.

• Replace the spring pin if there is any doubt

about its condition.

• The standard clearance between the I.D. of

the pinion gear and the O.D. of the pinion shaft
is less than .004” (.03-0.1mm). If worn to a
clearance greater than .004”, or if irregularities
are visible on either surface, replace the
effected components.

• Inspect the gear teeth on the pinion gears, and

the gear teeth and splines on the differential
gears.

7.64. Remove both ball bearings and spacer from the

right axle shaft using an arbor press.
See Figure 7.64.
