3. Console Redirection

An important feature of remote server management is the ability to take control of the
server from the remote console. When you choose Console Redirection from the Main
Menu, HP Remote Assistant displays these options:

Text Console Redirection

NT Graphics Console Redirection.

Text Redirection

When you choose Text Console Redirection, HP Remote Assistant displays the server
screen on your remote console and directs control of the server keyboard to the remote
console.

NOTE

HP Remote Assistant does not support the redirection of IBM OS/2 graphics
screens to the remote console. However, IBM OS/2 does provide a way to
switch to text mode. For more information, see "Switching to Text Mode in
OS/2," later in this section.

While the console is redirected, you can perform operations as if you were sitting in
front of the server. For example, you can execute NOS-level commands, check the
contents of directories, and edit configuration files. You can execute server utilities
and diagnostics for the server's Utility Partition. You can even run the HP Remote
Assistant Configuration Utility (described in Chapter 2) to change the server
management settings.

When keyboard commands are redirected to the server keyboard from a remote
console, keystrokes on a generic terminal keyboard may not control all PC keyboard
keys. Because there is no direct mapping between a generic terminal keyboard and a
PC keyboard, most special keys on the PC keyboard must be emulated using character
strings. For information on keyboard mapping, see Appendix D.

Also, be advised that HP Remote Assistant accepts only the basic 7-bit ASCII
character set (128 characters) from the remote console keyboard. If you are using a
non-U.S. keyboard on the server, you can use the Configuration Utility to specify a
keyboard layout that matches the keyboard driver being used by the server's operating
system. For more information on selecting a keyboard layout, see "Selecting Keyboard
Layouts," in Chapter 2.

NOTE

Console redirection is automatically enabled during a server reset so that you
can view boot-up messages as they appear on the server monitor.
