Battery Operation

If the server's power is interrupted, HP Remote Assistant automatically switches to
battery operation. HP Remote Assistant logs the event and generates a pager alert (if
configured). In addition, some HP Remote Assistant functions that require the server
to be powered up are also suspended, including console redirection, EISA Bus
Utilization monitoring, and server resets. If a remote modem connection is active
when power is interrupted, the connection will be maintained and HP Remote
Assistant will continue to accept incoming telephone calls. The board will continue to
function for at least one hour on battery power. (Users have reported up to four hours
of operation with "fresh," fully-charged battery cells.)

NOTE

If you are using an external modem with HP Remote Assistant, the modem
won't have access to battery power. To guarantee uninterrupted power to an
external modem, use a modem that is attached to a UPS (Uninterrupted
Power Supply).

Shutting Down the Board to Conserve
Battery Power

In the event that the server must be turned off for an extended period of time, the HP
Remote Assistant EISA Board should also be shut down. Shutting down the board
prevents the HP Remote Assistant from logging the server shutdown and sending out
pages. It will also prevent the battery pack from being discharged while a server is
intentionally powered-down. You can shut down the board from the HP Remote
Assistant Configuration Utility by choosing Shutdown Board from the Main Menu.
The HP Remote Assistant EISA Board will automatically power on when AC power is
applied to the server.

If an administrator does not shut down the board upon server shutdown, the board will
automatically shut itself down after three hours to conserve battery power. For more
information on using the Configuration Utility to manage board operations, see
Chapter 2.

NOTE

If you remove the HP Remote Assistant board from the server, it will
automatically shut itself down when it detects that is no longer connected to
the server.
