5 Using HPRA to Manage Server Operations

103

The option you choose depends on the problems experienced by the system.

NOTE

Power Cycle and Power Down are only available on HP NetServer systems
that accept the power control cable from the HP Remote Assistant board. For
more information on setting up the power control connection, see Chapter 2.

Selecting option 1, 2, or 3 also causes the redirection of the server console to the
remote console from which you are running HP Remote Assistant. This feature allows
you to view important system and NOS startup messages that appear on the server
monitor. Press Ctrl-B to relinquish control of the server console and return to the
menu. See the previous section, "Redirecting the Console," for more information on
accepting and relinquishing control of the host console.

Type a reset option number and press Enter. HP Remote Assistant will ask you to
confirm the reset before continuing. A power cycle turns off the server for about 15
seconds and then cycles it back on.

NOTE

If you power down the server from a remote console, someone at the server
site must press the red reset button on the back of the Remote Assistant
board.

Testing the Graceful Shutdown String

Shutting down the NOS also allows you to test the graceful shutdown string specified
with the HP Remote Assistant Configuration Utility. When you select the shutdown
option from the Server Reset Menu, HP Remote Assistant redirects the server console
to the remote console and sends the graceful shutdown string. (If no string is specified,
nothing is sent.) The server is not actually powered down, as it would be during an
actual graceful shutdown generated by a high-temperature condition.

5. DOS File Transfer

While you are connected to the HP Remote Assistant board in the server, you can
transfer DOS files between the remote console and the server. This feature extends the
capabilities of the administrator to include operations such as:

the uploading of a new server BIOS file and flashing it from the remote console

the transfer of configuration files, drivers, or additional diagnostic software to the
server
