Transfer Cylinder Replacement

The transfer cylinder is located on the left rear side of the
main frame and is connected to the main frame and
transfer carriage. Its function is to control forward and
backward movement of the transfer carriage. It has a
maximum operating pressure of 3500 psi (241 bar) and
has a stroke limit of 80 inches (2.032 mm).

a. Transfer Cylinder Removal

1. Level the vehicle, place the travel select lever in the

(N) NEUTRAL DETENT position, engage the
parking brake.

2. Move the transfer carriage 5' 8'' (172 cm) so that the

pin (13) connecting the transfer cylinder to the
transfer carriage is at a pin access hole (14) near the
rear of the cab.

3. Remove the top snap ring (15) from the transfer

carriage pin (13).

4. Temporarily tape the pin in place so it will not fall out

during the following procedure.

5. Move the transfer carriage all the way forward.

6. Remove the tape and the pin (13).

7. If you are replacing the pin, remove the bottom snap

ring (15).

8. Shut the engine OFF.

9. Place an Accident Prevention Tag on both the

ignition switch and steering wheel, stating that the
vehicle should not be operated. (Refer to Section
1.5, “Accident Prevention Tag Usage.”)

10. Open the engine compartment cover. Allow the

engine, transmission and hydraulic fluid to cool.

11. If the vehicle has dual batteries, disconnect both

negative battery cables (16 and 17) from both
batteries.

To access the lower battery (18), loosen the knob
(19) far enough so that the lip (20) on the upper
battery box clears the knob. Lift up the upper battery
box (21) and swing it out, so that the box clears the
hydraulic tank support bracket, to gain access to the
lower negative battery cable (16). Disconnect the
lower negative battery cable.

12. Secure the transfer cylinder with a sling and take up

any slack.

WARNING:

To avoid personal injury

and/or equipment damage, support the
hydraulic cylinder before removing any
additional hardware securing cylinder to
transfer carriage or main frame. Use suitable
blocking and lifting devices when removing
heavy vehicle components.
