2.9.1.3.1

Create a POP3 Mailbox

Contact your ISP or mail hosting service, or use the interface they have provid-
ed to you to create a POP3 mailbox for the fax server. The ISP or mail hosting
service will provide you with the domain name of their POP3 server and their
SMTP server (they can be the same or different); make a note of them since
you will need them later.

2.9.2

Email Integration using SMTP

SMTP is typically used when you have an on-site mail server. The Email gateway
functions much like an SMTP email server like Exchange, it has a specific domain
assigned to it, and sends and receives mail using SMTP.

2.9.2.1

Microsoft SMTP Server

To receive SMTP email, the Microsoft SMTP Server is required. This is available
on most Windows versions (with the notable exception of Windows 7).

2.9.2.1.1

Installing the Microsoft SMTP Server

Installation of the SMTP Server feature varies between operating systems.
XP and 2003:

Control Panel Add or Remove Programs Add/Remove Win

-

dows Components

. Double click

Application Server,

double-click

IIS

, then check

the box for

SMTP Service.

2008 and 2008 R2:

Administrative Tools Server Manager Features.

Click

Add Features

and check the

SMTP Server.

Windows 7: The Microsoft SMTP Server is not available on Windows 7. Please
use POP3 instead, or install the Email Gateway on a version of Windows that
includes the SMTP Server feature.

2.9.2.2

How the SMTP Gateway Operates

Outbound: The mail server receives the email from the user and relays it to the
gateway using SMTP. The gateway sends it to the fax server to be faxed, and
when it is complete, the gateway sends a notification back to the sender using
SMTP.
Inbound: When a fax is received and routed to email, the gateway emails it to
the recipient using SMTP.

2.9.2.3

Mail Server Requirements

The mail server must support SMTP. SSL is supported (using

STARTTLS

).

2.9.2.4

Choosing a Domain Name

The domain name is used to route mail to the fax server. It must be unique. It is
usually preferable to choose something that is recognizable as used for fax. A
