Center
Software

Depending on your operating system, you will use either Microsoft Active-
Sync or Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) Software for PC-hand-
held device communication.

Microsoft ActiveSync is used by Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
for PC and device communication. It must be installed on the same PCs
where the portables will be connected and it must be configured to allow
the portable to gain access to the network. Before installing the DMS
application, make sure that Microsoft ActiveSync is installed on your PC,
a partnership is established between your handheld device and your com-
puter, and that you are able to synchronize data between the PC and your
handheld device. For more information about installing ActiveSync on
your desktop computer, please refer to

“Installing Microsoft ActiveSync on

your Desktop Computer” on page 27

. For more information about config-

uring Microsoft ActiveSync, please refer to

“Work Network Communication

Setting” on page 28

. For more information about setting up a partnership

between your PC and the handheld device, please refer to

“Setting Up a

Sync Relationship” on page 29

.

Windows Mobile Device Center Software and the Microsoft Sync Center
are used with Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 oper-
ating systems for device and PC communication. Make sure that a two-
way sync partnership is established between your PC and your device and
that work network communication is selected; please see

“Setting Up a

Windows Mobile Partnership” on page 30

and

“Required WMDC Work Net-

work Connection Setting” on page 31

. Make sure that your device is a sync

center supported device that uses Windows Mobile Device Center soft-
ware.

Using WMDC with Windows Server 2008

When you use Windows Server 2008 operating system, you must install
the Desktop Features experience before installing Windows Mobile Device
Center software (refer to

“Installing the Desktop Features Experience” on

page 30

for more information).
