COMPRESSION
PRESSURE TEST

Start and run engine
approximately five
minutes at fast idle, to
bring it to normal
operating temperature.

Stop engine.

Disconnect and ground spark plug wires away
from spark plug holes. Remove spark plugs.

Install JDM59 Compression Gauge.

Make sure choke plate is in wide open position.

Move throttle lever to fast idle position. Crank
engine and record pressure reading.

SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum Pressure:
B43E (Early 316),
B43G (Early 318) and
B48G (Early 420) . . . . . . . . . . . 690 kPa (100 psi)
P218G (Later 316 and 318) and
P220G (Later 420) . . . . . . . . . . . 517 kPa (75 psi)
Maximum Difference Between
Cylinders . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69 kPa (10 psi)

Remove Compression
Gauge.

Put clean engine oil on
piston rings through
spark plug holes.

Repeat compression
pressure test.

If pressure increases significantly, check rings,
piston, and cylinder bore for broken rings,
scoring, wear or damage.

If pressure does not increase significantly, check
for leaking valves, valve seats, or cylinder head
gasket.

ENGINE OIL
PRESSURE TEST

Remove right engine side panel.

Remove voltage regulator.

Remove engine shroud upper
mounting bolts.

Bend engine shroud away from
engine for access to oil pressure

switch.

IMPORTANT: The voltage
regulator must be grounded to
prevent damage to it when engine
is run.

Attach a ground wire from regulator
to any frame location.

Gauge

Start and run engine for five minutes at fast idle,
to warm oil to normal operating temperature.

Stop engine.

Remove oil pressure switch and make test
connections as shown.

Run engine at test specification and record
readings.
