9 - Using Nav Objects
Dead Reckoning
Dead Reckoning (DR) is a fallback method of navigation where known values
are used in place of unknown values. It is used when GPS is unavailable. Dead
Reckoning can also be used when the GPS is available. If used with an active GPS,
a warning message will appear on the screen.
Some of the features in Dead Reckoning are included for the purpose of learning
and experimenting with the software when the computer is not connected to any
navigation devices. In Dead Reckoning mode, you can simulate boat placement and
movement without a GPS connected.
When Dead Reckoning is enabled the boat icon will move on the chart according to
the existing speed and heading until device input resumes.

Right-click on the boat icon. The Context Menu for the boat opens.
Select Dead Reckoning. Navigation controls switch to manual mode, allowing you to
use keyboard commands to move the boat.

FHd Increases or decreases boat speed within the Workboat
Navigator program, keeping pace with actual boat speed.
Hold down
FHc
or
FHa Turns the boat to port or starboard (arrow direction) to
maintain heading on the chart.
Moving the Boat in Dead Reckoning
In Dead Reckoning Mode, you can also move the boat to any given location on the
chart if the GPS is no longer keeping your position information accurate.
You can move the boat in two ways:
Left-click on the Chart window pane; select Context Menu and left-click the Move
Boat (DR) button. Your mouse cursor will change into a “Move Boat” cursor. The
next left-click of your mouse on the Chart window pane places the boat in the
location you clicked.
Right-click on the Chart window pane in a location you wish to move the boat.
The Chart Context Menu will appear. Select Move Boat (DR) from the Context
Menu. Your boat will be placed at the location you right-clicked.
You can then proceed to navigate from this new location. This feature is meant to
help you navigate when instrumentation is no longer functioning. Use the Dead
Reckoning navigation Hot Keys to establish course and speed.
