FCS Frame Check Sequence. Data included in frames for error control.

IREWALL
A combination of hardware and software which limits the exposure of a computer or group of
computers to an attack from outside. A network-level firewall, or packet filter, examines traffic
at the network protocol packet level.
FLOW CONTROL
Technique using hardware circuits or control characters to regulate the transmission of data
between a computer (or other DTE) and a modem (or other DCE). Typically, the modem has
buffers to hold data; if the buffers approach capacity, the modem signals the computer to stop
while it catches up on processing the data in the buffer. See CTS, RTS, xon/xoff.
FRAGMENTATION
Process of breaking a packet into smaller units so that they can be sent over a network medium
that cannot transmit the complete packet as a unit.

Logical grouping of information sent as a link-layer unit. Compare datagram, packet.

A form of packet switching that performs error checking and efficiently handles high-speed,
bursty data over wide area networks.

Occurs when framing bits are set improperly, or when the two ends of a circuit are configured
for different framing formats.
FTP File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used for reliable file transfers. Application protocol that lets
one IP node transfer files to and from another node.

SERVER
Host on network from which clients can transfer files.
FXO Foreign Exchange Office. An analog trunk interface which may be connected to a PBX or to the
local PSTN Central Office. The FXO interface may be configured in either loop-start or ground-
start mode.
FXS Foreign Exchange Station. An analog line interface, which may be connected to a PBX or
directly to a telephone station, set. The FXS interface may be configured in either loop-start or
ground-start mode.
