SOCKS

An application proxy which operates at the application “socket” level.

STATIC ROUTE

Route entered manually in a routing table.

UBNET

Logical partitions of a single network.

SUBNET MASK

A 32-bit address mask that identifies which bits of an IP address represent the network address
information and which bits represent node identifier information.

SVC

Switched virtual circuit.

SYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION

Method of data communication requiring the transmission of timing signals to keep PPP peers
synchronized in sending and receiving blocks of data.

T1

A digital line that carries data at 1.544 Mbps. Fractional T1 refers to data transmission between
56 kbps and 1.544 Mbps. The XSP-100 provides twenty-four 64-kbps “fractions,” or channels,
which may be allocated for either voice or data traffic.

LINK

Digital transmission link capable of speeds up to 1544 kilobits per second.

ULTIPLEXER

A device that can multiplex 24 channels at 64 kbps onto a single digital signal.

Terminal adapter. Device that connects a network or terminal to an ISDN network.

(TMB)

When a CGA condition is present, the Trunk Make Busy process will affect all the DS0 circuits
of the T1 that is receiving the alarm signal. The TMB process will reach across the digital cross
connect and affect that side of the circuits also. The process will first put all the related circuits
to idle in both directions of a cross connect for a short period of time. Then based upon the TMB
setting, it will put these circuits to a busy state or maintain them in the idle state until the CGA
condition is cleared.

TCP

Transport Control Protocol. The primary transport-layer protocol of the TCP/IP protocol stack.
TCP provides byte stream communication between pairs of processes in hosts attached to
interconnected networks.

TDM

Time Division Multiplex. A technique for transmitting a number of signals simultaneously over
one communications medium by interleaving a piece of each signal one after another.

T

ELNET

A TCP/IP protocol offering a line-oriented connection over the LAN/WAN. Telnet is typically
used to remotely log on to an Internet device or host.
