ETMASK
Also called subnet mask. When this value is viewed as a 32-bit binary number, the high bits have
1’s. These 1’s “mask off” the network and host number.

This is a device placed by the local Telephone company for the purpose of maintenance and
testing of a circuit. It usually provides features for level control and maintenance loop backs.

The high bits of an IP address, which correspond to those bits in the associated subnet mask
which, have 1’s.

NTP Network Time Protocol. Developed to provide an accepted concept of time among Internet hosts
around the world.
NULL MODEM
Cable or connection device used to connect two computing devices directly rather than over a
network.

Off-hook condition indicates that the circuit is in active state(i.e., busy). The opposite condition
is on-hook (idle).

A call that comes from a user on the XSP – 100 to the CO.

Logical grouping of information that includes a header and data. Compare frame, datagram.

ILTERING
The recognition and selective transmission or blocking of bundles of data based on destination
addresses or other packet contents.
PAP Password Authentication Protocol. Security protocol within the PPP protocol suite that prevents
unauthorized access to network services. See RFC 1334 for PAP specifications. Compare CHAP.
PARITY
Method of checking the integrity of each character received over a communication channel.
PBX Private Branch Exchange. A customer telephone system that emulates a carrier branch exchange
office.
