During extensive factory testing, shredder
models were tested above and beyond their
recommended capabilities. It was discovered
that on some units, when too large an object
was placed into the hopper, damage to the cut-
ting blade occurred. This damage usually
results in a bent blade which can then strike
the backup plate causing extensive damage to
the unit and possible bending of the engine
crankshaft. Further inspection of units in the
field indicate that the cause of this type of fail-
ure was due to negligence on the part of the
operator. It is noted in the owner’s guide that
material placed into the hopper must be 1/2
inch diameter or less (on all units).

4-1.1

Model 640 can accept up to two-inch
branches, and Model 641 can accept up to 2-
1/2 inches through the chipper chute. See Fig-
ure 4-13.

4-1.2

Models 645, 648 and 651 can accept branch-
es up to 3 inch diameter through the chipper
chute. See Figure 4-13.

NOTE

The manufacturer cannot assume responsibil-
ity for conditions over which it has no control.

4.1.3

To limit the extent of future damage to the unit,
under the circumstances described, and to
reduce the cost of extensive repairs for the
customer, the backup plate has been rede-
signed. The mounting hardware for the cutting
blade and chipper blades has been changed.
These parts changes are available as Service
Kit part number 753-0516. If a unit is brought
into your shop for any repair, install kit 753-
0516.

NOTE

The black backup plate is the latest style and
can be used as a replacement when needed.

4-1.4

For best performance, it is important to keep
cutting blade and chipper blades sharpened.
Refer to Maintenance section of the owner’s
manual or shop handbook. If the composition
of the material being discharged changes
(becomes stringy, etc.), or if the rate at which
the material is discharged slows down consid-
erably, it is likely that the cutting blade and/or
chipper blades are dull and need to be sharp-
ened or replaced. (When reassembling the cut-
ting blade, tighten to between 550 and 650 in-
lbs.) See Figure 4-14.

4-1.5

The letter A after the first three digits in the
model number (Example: 242A-640-000) indi-
cates for 1992 a three bolt shredder blade is
mounted to the impeller. Also after the sixth
digit in the model number (Example: 242A-
640A-000) the letter indicates the type of hop-
per used. The letter A indicates that a plastic
hopper was used. The letter B indicates that a
standard steel hopper was used. The letter C
indicates that a spring adjustable steel hopper
was used.
