DO

1. Use clean oil.
2.

Use an oil filter (preferable at the pump inlet).

3.

Mount the pump properly (check alignment).

4.

Use flexible “spider-type” coupling with clear-
ance between pump and engine driveshafts.

5.

Only split wood lengthwise (with the grain).

6. Check tank oil level regularly.
7. Make sure hoses are not pinched or blocked.
8. Bleed hoses of air before using.
9. Flush and clean system before start-up after

any malfunction or servicing.

10. Use liquid/paste pipe dope on hydraulic fit-

tings.

11. Let system warm up before splitting wood.
12. Use multiviscosity oil to allow for temperature

extremes.

13. Use a breather cap on the reservoir.
14. Return flow to tank with tube below oil level.
15. “Jog” engine with spark plug disconnected to

prime pump before start-up.

DON’T

1. Use extremely cold oil (20° F min.).
2. Use dirty oil.
3.

Use clogged filter.

4. Let oil level in tank drop.
5. Use solid pump-to-engine coupling.
6. Force pump when mounting.
7. Cut wood across the grain.
8. Run over relief valve for more than a few sec-

onds at a time.

9. Tamper with sequence or relief valve settings.
10. Let oil get too hot (150° F max.).
11. Run with air in system.
12. Use teflon tape on hydraulic fittings.
13. Warm up engine before connecting to pump in

cold weather.
