4-2.Sharpening or Replacing Shredder Blade.

WARNING

Disconnect spark plug wire and move it away
from spark plug.

1.

Lower hopper assembly. Block up housing.

2.

Remove six hex lock nuts and washers from
housing weld bolts using a 1/2 inch wrench.
Separate shredder into two halves.

3.

Remove backup plate.

NOTE

When reassembling, make certain the open-
ing on backup plate is toward the bottom of the
unit. The backup plate may be reversed to pro-
vide a new cutting edge.

4.

Loosen two hand knobs and cupped washers
which secure chute deflector. Raise chute
deflector.

5.

Keep impeller assembly from turning by insert-
ing a 1/2 or 3/4 inch diameter pipe through flail
screen, or remove flail screen and insert a
piece of wood (2 x 4) into chute opening.

6.

Remove the two outside screws on the blade
using a 3/16 inch allen wrench and a 1/2 inch
wrench. Remove the blade by removing center
bolt, lock washer and flat washer.

CAUTION

Use caution when removing blade to avoid
contacting weld bolts on housing.

7.

When sharpening the blade, follow the original
angle of grind as a guide. It is extremely impor-
tant that each cutting edge receives an equal
amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced
blade. An unbalanced blade will cause exces-
sive vibration when rotating at high speeds and
may cause damage to the unit. The blade can
be tested for balance by balancing it on a
round shaft screwdriver or nail. Remove metal
from the heavy side until it is balanced evenly.
See Figure 4-18.

8.

When reassembling the blade, tighten to
between 550 and 650 in-lbs, or lacking torque
wrench, tighten securely. See Figure 4-19.

9.

Reassemble shredder in reverse order.

4-3. Impeller Replacement.

1.

Remove hopper and lower inlet guide assem-
bly from blower housing as previously
explained.

2.

which extend through housing. Remove clevis
pins.

3.

Remove chute deflector by removing the 4
inch long hex bolt. See Figure 4-20.

4.

Remove the front half of blower housing by
removing 13 hex bolts that hold housing halves
together.
