7 Managing networks

Overview

VCM provides a network module to manage logical networks rather than physical networks. A logical

network includes the following resources:

VLAN—VLANs are used to isolate networks, each VLAN representing a network. When a network
is selected to create a connection, the VM in the connection will be assigned to the VLAN of the

network. The VLAN information will be delivered to the edge switch to permit the VLAN traffic

through the interface that is connected to the VM. In an EVB network, VLANs can be used to

identify VSI traffic for filtering.

Max. Connections—Maximum number of connections supported by a single network. The value
can be determined based on the number of VMs and number of NICs on each VM. For example,
if 100 VMs reside in a network, it might be insufficient to set the maximum number of connections

to 100. This is because a VM can have multiple NICs with each NIC corresponding to one

connection, and the total connections might exceed the total number of VMs.

VSI Type—The VSI Type configured for a network assigns network configuration to VMs.

Network management privileges

Network management privileges of an operator determine the following information:

Network operations that can be performed by the operator.

Scope of networks the operator can manage.

Predefined network management privileges

An operator group uses one of the following privileges: ADMIN, Maintainer, and Viewer. Network

operations supported in VCM vary by the privilege, as shown

Table 4

. Operators gain privileges to

perform network operations based on operator groups.
