You can select whether to output Business Continuity Manager logs to an external dataset by using
the system logger service or to output them to a sequential dataset by not using the system logger
service.

The system logger service provides the MVS standard log writing, display and deletion functions.

The system logger service also offers the following features:

Ability to use frameworks for log volume management (functions to automatically migrate log
data and allocate log datasets) and failure management (a log duplication function)

Sysplex compatibility, allowing integration of Business Continuity Manager logs for primary
and secondary sites

Ability for users to perform customization to take only the required information after collection

When the system logger service is used, all Business Continuity Manager log data collected by
the system logger service are output to an external dataset. For details on how to set this up, see

“System Logger Service Setup” (page 715)

.

For details on how to set up the system logger service, see the section that describes how to set
up the Business Continuity Manager environment variables in the HP XP7 for Business Continuity
Manager Installation Guide
.

System Logger Service Setup

Before using the DASD-only log stream in Business Continuity Manager, the setup described in
MVS Setting Up a Sysplex must be done. For details about the DASD-only log stream, see the MVS
Programming: Assembler Services Guide
.

If the system logger service is not set up, response messages of the system logger service might be
output on the console when performing CLI commands.

If an error occurs when connecting to a log stream for reasons such as the log stream not being
defined, the YKZ217E message (name=IXGCONN) is output to the console upon the first execution
of a CLI command after logging on to TSO/E. If this happens, the Business Continuity Manager
log data will not output while CLI commands are still being processed. To output Business Continuity
Manager log data, you must log onto TSO/E again, after fixing the cause of the problem.

When setting up the system logger service, pay special attention to the following items.

Starting and Stopping System Logger Service

To use the log stream, you need to use one of the following methods to activate the system (system
logger address space). If the system is not active, an error will occur with the connection request
macro (IXGCONN).

Add SUBSYS SUBNAME(LOGR) INITRTN(IXGSSINT) to the IEFSSNxx parmlib member.

Execute the SETSSI ADD,SUBNAME=LOGR,INITRTN=IXGSSINT command.

Use this to dynamically add the system.

Input S IXGLOGRS.

To stop the service, enter FORCE IXGLOGR,ARM.

Setting up LOGR Couple Data Sets

On a Sysplex environment, you need to format the LOGR couple data sets, and define them so that
they are sysplex-compatible.
