3 Understanding Business Continuity Manager functions

This chapter describes Business Continuity Manager functions.

The Remote DKC Control function

This section describes the Remote DKC Control function.

Overview of the Remote DKC Control function

The Remote DKC Control function is used from a host to control storage systems that cannot be
directly connected to the host (remote storage systems), due to the storage systems being at remote
sites.

Using the Remote DKC Control function allows you to perform operations on copy groups and to
acquire the status of copy groups. Commands that perform operations on Business Continuity
Manager copy groups are sent to remote storage systems via command devices.

The following figure explains the terms related to the Remote DKC Control function.

Figure 45 Overview of the Remote DKC Control function

Route – The path used to send Business Continuity Manager copy group operation commands
to a remote storage system. A maximum of eight storage systems can be set for a route.

Command device – A volume used to send Business Continuity Manager copy group operation
commands to a remote storage system. A command device must be defined for each storage
system on a route. A command device supports unidirectional communication only.

Route list – A list defining routes used by Business Continuity Manager to execute copy group
operation commands.

Command device line – A line linking a series of command devices defined for the storage
systems on a route. Multiple command device lines can be defined for a single route.
