Community Strings

SNMP Community Strings can serve as passwords or user IDs for network elements. The community name
assigns an access environment for a set of SNMP Hosts or Agents using that community name. An SNMP
Host or Agent within the community can be said to exist within the same administrative domain. Because
devices that do not know the proper community name are precluded from SNMP operations, network
management personnel can use the community name as a weak form of authentication. Community strings
can be either read only or read/write. Having this capability provides further security by restricting the
ability to alter the configuration of the managed device.

Presently the controller defaults the value of the community string to “public” with read/write access. These
SNMP parameters are not configurable at this time.
