The RUN legend is extinguished and the instrument reverts to
fully operational mode with no data being logged.

All preliminary set up operations and command procedures have now
been covered, so that the dosimeter is ready to be worn by a user as de-
scribed in Section 4.9.

4.9

Wearing the Dosimeter

The instrument is intended to be worn by an individual so that its micro-
phone is subjected to as nearly as possible the same sound exposure as
the wearer.

The procedures contained in most measurement standards suggest that
the dosimeter be worn at all times throughout the working day. How-
ever, some standards allow a projected exposure to be calculated from
typical representative sample periods. With the dosimeter calibrated and
either logging data as described above or with logging start and stop
times set, use the following guidelines to find a convenient way of wear-
ing it.

1.

Clip the microphone as close to the wearer's ear as possible.
ISO 1999: 1990 stipulates 10 cm

±1 cm.

In some circumstances, it may be possible to wear the micro-
phone clipped to safety spectacles, on a helmet, or on ear de-
fenders. A more comfortable location may be found on a lapel
or the shoulder of a garment.

2.

Put the instrument in a convenient pocket, or clip it to the
wearer's belt or waistband.

Now the operator should be able to turn to the important matter of ob-
taining the required results, as described in Chapter 5.
