Appendix B – Cable Lengths

Maximum cable lengths are dependent on both power and communication requirements.

In some cases, it may be beneficial to use wire pairs, normally designated for communica-

tions, for power instead. This may make sense in applications where only one communica-

tion port is needed. In this case, you can extend the distance of power by adding a commu-

nication wire pair to the power wire pair. In addition, since the power requirements for the

SmartSensor Advance model SS200V are lower than those for the SmartSensor Advance

model SS200, the maximum cable lengths are longer.

Maximum Cable Length for Powering SS200V

The following recommendations allow you to provide reliable power to the SmartSensor.

The SmartSensor cable’s red and black wires provide a 20 AWG wire pair. The other pairs on

the SmartSensor cable are 22 AWG and are normally used for communication.

The table below shows the cable lengths for power when using a SmartSensor Advance

model SS200V (see Table B.1):

Cable Gauge

24 Volts

12 Volts

20 AWG (6-conductor)

1500 ft. (457.2 m)

300 ft. (91.44 m)

Add 485+/485- (6-conductor)

2450 ft. (746.76 m)

500 ft. (152.4 m)

14 AWG

6500 ft. (1.98 km)

1300 ft. (396.24 m)

12 AWG

9000 ft. (2.74 km)

1800 ft. (548.64 m)

10 AWG

13700 ft. (4.18 km)

2800 ft. (853.44 m)

Table B.1 – Maximum Cable Length for Power (model SS200V)

If the cable length is longer than 1500 ft. (457.2 m) when operating at 24 V, it is possible to

increase the maximum cable length by wiring a pair of lines normally used for RS-485 com-

munications with the red and black wires.
