CMTS Configuration Guide

By default the upstream channels are disabled. Use the command line interface to enable the upstream channels before
use. The channels are identified in the CMTS configuration based on the slot the CMTS module occupies in the
RS 8000/8600 chassis and the location of the connector on the front panel.

Only those commands that operate on a specific upstream channel (or group of channels) require that the channel be
specified.

To enable upstream channel 1 on a CMTS module located in slot 7 of the RS 8000/8600 chassis you would enter the
following command:

When setting the upstream channel, modulation profile 1 is assigned by default. Three predefined profiles are
available – 1, 2, and 3. These profiles may be modified. In addition, you can create up to five additional profiles for
use in your installation.

For more information about the physical characteristics of the CMTS module and for installation instructions in the
RS 8000/8600 chassis refer to Riverstone RS Switch Router Getting Started Guide.

PROVISIONING THE HEADEND

Prior to installing the RS 8000/8600 with CMTS the headend must be prepared for two-way data operation. For this
preparation the cable headend should be:

Swept, balanced, and certified for analog and two-way data.

Wired for narrowcast downstream data transmission.

Wired to supply an RF feed from the upstream fiber-optic receivers to the CMTS

In addition, the following should be accomplished:

Upstream frequencies allocated for data transmission.

Upstream ingress noise measured and understood.

Downstream frequencies assigned.

All RF connectivity verified.

When the RS 8000/8600 is installed:

Internet connectivity should be established (if internet connectivity is required).

Internet addresses must be obtained and allocated.

The DHCP, TFTP, DNS and TOD servers must be configured and enabled.

The following sections describe connecting and configuring the RS 8000/8600 CMTS.
