RS-232C Board

If the optional RS-232C board is installed in this facsimile, the fax
may be used for other purposes in addition to normal facsimile
communication.

(2) Functions of the RS-232C Board

If the optional RS-232C board is installed in this facsimile, in addition
to its normal facsimile functions, the RS-232C functions of this fax will
be available for use. The RS-232C board enables the 4 functions
explained below. However, in order to use these functions, it is first
necessary to turn the RS-232C mode ON.

PC-Fax (Transmission and Reception)

Documents and images created on your personal computer can be
transmitted directly to another party’s facsimile via this fax and your
telephone line. In addition, documents and images sent from another
party’s facsimile can be received directly into your personal computer
via this fax.

PC-Printing

Documents and images sent from your personal computer can be
printed out by this fax.

PC-Scanning

Documents and images can be scanned by this fax and the data sent
to your personal computer.

TWAIN Scanning for Windows 95/98, Windows 3.1 and
Windows NT 4.0

This fax can be used as a Scanning system for computers running
under a Windows 95/98, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT 4.0
environment. Refer to pages 10-6 and 10-7 for more detailed
information on operation, etc., in the Windows environment.

RS-232C connector (Serial port)…Connect with a 25-pin RS-
232C cable to enable this fax unit to be used as a TWAIN scanner
and to enable the unit’s PC-Fax functionality.

* It is necessary to obtain a 25-pin RS-232C cable in advance before

you can use the RS-232C functions of this facsimile.

(3) Precautions

Always take note of the following prior to turning the RS-232C mode
ON.

* The operation panel will still be operable even when the RS-232C

mode is turned ON. (Refer to “

Dual Access Function Table”,

page 2-10.)

* The normal fax capabilities of this unit will not be accessible during

the period the RS-232C mode is ON and the related application
software in your personal computer is running. In other words, fax
transmission/reception, settings and registration in the fax itself will
not be possible.

* If the RS-232C mode is ON but the power to your personal

computer is OFF, the RS-232C capabilities of this fax will not be
available. In this case, any documents sent to the facsimile will be
received just as in any standard Automatic fax reception.

* If the related application software in your computer is running when

the power to the fax is OFF (the power cord is disconnected), it is
necessary to return power to the fax (connect the power cord), turn
the RS-232C mode ON again and then restart the application in
your computer in order to use the RS-232C capabilities of this fax
once again. (Refer to “(5) RS-232C Mode ON/OFF”, page 10-5.)

* Always supply power to the facsimile (connect the power cord) and

turn the RS-232C mode ON BEFORE starting the related
application software in your personal computer. (Refer to
“(5) RS-232C Mode ON/OFF”, page 10-5.)

* RS-232C capabilities may not be accessible during warm up of the

fax unit or when an error has occurred.

* If the facsimile is in the middle of a transmission, a reception, or in

the middle of copying, the facsimile will not be able to receive
commands from your computer.

* For a detailed explanation of the proper procedure for using

RS-232C capabilities from your computer, refer to the Instruction
Manual of the related application software in use in that computer.

* In order to use the PC-Fax functions, it is necessary to turn the PC-

Fax reception setting ON. (Refer to “(6) PC-Fax Reception
ON/OFF”, page 10-6.) The following software is recommended for
use with the PC-Fax function: Laser Fax 3.5 (Word Craft
International Limited), WinFaxPro 8.0 for Windows 95, Windows 98
and Windows NT 4.0 (Symantec), and WinFaxPro 4.0 for Windows
3.1 (Symantec)
