2 Managing the VFM common services

The VFM manages different DC networks that use the following technologies:

SAN—Uses FCoE technology and TCP/IP protocol suite to interconnect servers, FCoE switches,
and storage devices into a fabric inside a DC.

TRILL—Implements Layer 2 interconnection inside a large-sized DC network.

SPB—Implements Layer 2 interconnection inside a medium- or small-sized DC network.

EVI—Implements Layer 2 interconnection between DCs.

Select a correct management module when you configure or maintain a network:

Use the SAN management module to configure and maintain an SAN network inside a DC.

Use the TRILL or SPB management module based on the supported technology on the network to
configure and maintain Layer 2 interconnection inside a DC.

Use the EVI management module to configure and maintain Layer 2 interconnection between DCs.

Managing an SAN

1.

Create a DC in the VFM and import FCoE switches to the DC. For more information, see "

Adding

a DC

." and "

Importing a network device

."

2.

Create a fabric in the DC. Add FCoE switches, servers, and storage devices to the fabric by using
one of the following ways:

{

Manually import all FCoE switches to the fabric. All servers and storage devices that have been
successfully registered with the FCoE switches are added to the fabric at the same time.

{

Manually import an FCoE switch to the fabric. Use this switch as a seed switch, and configure
its VSAN auto discovery function to discover switches and VSANs and add them to the fabric.

All servers and storage devices that have been successfully registered with the FCoE switches
are added to the fabric at the same time.

For information about how to create a fabric, add FCoE switches to the fabric, and configure
VSAN auto discovery, see "

Adding a fabric

," "

Importing FCoE switches

," and "

VSAN auto

discovery

," respectively.

3.

Synchronize the FCoE switch configuration to the VFM. Make sure the VFM gets the most recent
FCoE switch configuration before you configure or maintain the SAN. For more information, see

"

Synchronizing FCoE switches

."

4.

Configure and maintain the SAN by using one of the following ways:

{

One-by-one configuration—Configures the following items in the fabric to control mutual
access between servers and storage devices:

Each FCoE switch and their interfaces. See "

Managing FCoE switches

."

VSANs. See "

Managing VSANs

."

Zones. See "

Zone database

."

{

Automatic deployment—Uses the SAN fast deployment function to configure mutual access
between each pair of a server and a storage device. Repeat the fast deployment operations
