6 Managing SANs

The SAN management module allows operators to manage fabrics by using one of the following

methods:

Completes fabric configurations in VFM according to the fabric planning in the following steps:

Create a fabric.

Import FCoE switches to the fabric.

Configure DCBX parameters for the FCoE switches and their CEE interfaces, enabling lossless
communication between the FCoE switches and servers.

Configure VSANs and VFC interfaces

Configure zones to control access between servers and storage devices.

Create FC ping and FC tracert tasks to detect fabric status.

Quickly deploys SANs in VFM.
Before using this method, the operator needs to perform some basic configurations in VFM. This
method allows the operator to configure access between one server-storage pair at a time.

For operators to easily manage fabrics, VFM also provides the functions of default DCBX parameter

configuration, VSAN auto discovery, and FC ping threshold settings.

Default DCBX parameters—Allows you to use default DCBX parameters for FCoE switches and
CEE interfaces if they do not require custom DCBX settings. This facilitates and unifies the
configuration of DCBX parameters.

VSAN auto discovery—Allows you to use a seed switch to discover other FCoE switches and
VSANs in a fabric. This function enables operators to quickly add a fabric to VFM.

FC ping threshold settings—Allows you to keep informed of fabric faults. When the packet loss
ratio detected by an FC ping task is greater than a defined threshold, an alarm is triggered.

Default DCBX parameters

DCBX parameters are used to ensure lossless forwarding of packets between FCoE switches and servers
/storage devices. DCBX parameters are configured on FCoE switches, which then send the parameter

values to attached converged network adapters (CNAs) on servers and storage devices after

negotiation.

In a fabric, DCBX parameters apply to FCoE frames and FIP frames.
