Overlapping Buttons

Introduction

SpruceUp does not prevent you from creating titles with overlapping buttons. However, we
do strongly recommend against using overlapping buttons, due to the unpredictable nature
of their actions.

How big of an issue this is depends on how viewers will select the buttons to navigate your
title – clicking on the buttons with a mouse or using the navigation arrows of a DVD player.
The DVD specification does not define what should happen when a selected button overlaps
another. Because of this, DVD set-top and software players do not consistently react the
same way. You may build a title that works fine on your system but fails on someone else's.
Additionally, non-rectangular buttons may overlap even though they don't appear to. This is
because the DVD specification defines all buttons to have a rectangular selection area. See
the example below.

Setting Button Priorities

Each time a new button is placed on the menu, it becomes the highest priority and appears
on top of all others if it overlaps them. SpruceUp provides two tools for rearranging the
button priorities: Send to Front and Send to Back. Both are available in the Edit pull
down menu. You can also right-click on a button to select Send to Front or Send to Back.
See the Layering Priorities topic for more information.

Note: Text entries always are higher priority than buttons.

Different Kinds of Overlap

There are three kinds of overlap situations you may set up, and each has its own
peculiarities.

With the above situation, a mouse click in the overlap area results in erratic behavior, with
SpruceUp trying to perform both functions. Using the arrows on the DVD player generally
works as expected.

The above situation, with buttons completely nested within other buttons, cannot be used
with mouse selections. Using the arrows on the DVD player may work as expected, but
different players will provide different results. This is a good situation to avoid if possible.
