SpruceUp User’s Guide

Edit Your Sources

There are several things you may need to do to a movie before you can use it as part of the
DVD title:

• Edit the movie to select just the parts to use with the DVD title.
• Put scenes in the correct order
• Add transitions between the scenes (fades, wipes, etc.)
• Make video adjustments, such as changing the brightness or chroma levels

• Alter the audio by mixing additional tracks or editing its content

SpruceUp cannot directly link (edit) multiple movies together or change the audio. Use an
NLE (Non-Linear Editor) or video editing application such as Adobe Premiere or those from
Ulead Systems to perform these functions.

Encode for SpruceUp

This is the most critical step in preparing the video for use with SpruceUp – professional
DVD producers often employ people whose sole job is to MPEG encode video. MPEG
encoding presents a large number of choices of settings, some with strange names. DVDs
have their own requirements – MPEG encoders often have one or more "DVD" settings. Be
sure to read the information provided with your encoder to become familiar with the
settings. See the MPEG Settings Summary topic for SpruceUp requirements. See the Video
Assets
topic for details on MPEG encoding requirements for DVD.
You need to balance two contradictory goals: Get the best quality possible with as small a
file as possible. File size is particularly important when you intend to distribute your title on
CD-R.

Tip: It is very important to know that SpruceUp just passes on the

video – it does not process it at all. For example, it cannot adjust the
colors or convert from MPEG-1 to MPEG-2.

Always try to have the best quality source possible. MPEG encoding requires finding
redundant material in the video so that it can be removed and reinserted later. Noisy video
leads to poor encodes, since the noise is interpreted as motion and is carefully encoded and
retained.

If you run into problems with the encode and must fix the video, be sure to go back to the
source and re-export a new MPEG file as opposed to trying to fix the MPEG file directly.
