SpruceUp's "URL" Entry
SpruceUp provides a "URL" entry for buttons and Chapter Points. This allows a DVD title to
provide expanded information when played on Windows-based PCs using the Syzygy player.
Finding the URL Entry
Chapter Points
The URL entry is available for each Chapter Point in a movie. To assign Chapter Points and
access the URL entry, open the Clip Properties dialog for the movie by double-clicking on
the movie in the Media Gallery. See the Clip Properties topic for details.
URLs assigned to Chapter Points execute whenever playback reaches that point in the
movie. You can assign different URLs to each Chapter Point.
Buttons
Each button on a menu can have a URL assigned to it. Access the URL entry by right-
clicking the button and selecting the Properties item from the pop-up menu.
URLs assigned to a button can be tested prior to compiling. Press the Test Link... button to
have SpruceUp execute the text you have entered, allowing you to verify that it processes
properly.
The URL Entry is Not Just for URLs!
A "URL" refers to a web site's Universal Resource Locator, an example being:
http://www.sprucetechnologies.com
When entering a URL, be sure to include the entire name.
URLs are not the only entry you can make here - you can enter the path and file name for
anything that can be recognized and executed. For example, entering:
C:\Documents\SpruceUp.PDF
would cause the file SpruceUp.PDF located in the C: drive's Documents directory to execute,
launching Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view it.
To launch a file residing on the disc being played (regardless of the its drive letter) enter:
DVD:\SpruceUp.PDF
This would launch Adobe's Acrobat Reader and display the file SpruceUp.PDF in it. Keep in
mind that since you are reading this file from the same disc the DVD player is reading from,
there can be an interruption of playback while the file is opened.
To launch your email program and start a new email, enter;
mailto:[email protected]
replacing the [email protected] address with the actual one you wish to use.
The URL Entry in Action
Not all DVD players process the information entered here - currently set-top players ignore
it. Since the typical reason to use this is to open a web browser or view a document, it
actually lends itself to PC applications in any case. SpruceUp supplies DVD player software
called Syzygy that processes these entries. See the Export Dialog topic for details on
including the player with your title.
