Tutorial Step Three

Creating Menus

Most DVD titles contain at least one menu, and it is typically the first thing to appear when
the title starts playing. A menu is made up of a background image, one or more buttons
linked to the movie(s), and optionally some text explaining what to do.

For details on creating menus, please see the Creating Menus topic. For details on what can
be used as a background, see the Background Assets topic. For button details, see the
Button Assets topic

Naming Your Project

Before creating the menus, it is a good idea to name and save the project. This provides a
clean slate to start with and allows you to save versions of your project as backup.
First, to provide a clean start:

1 Select File – New. Optionally, press Ctrl + N. Any existing menus and movies are

removed.

Next, to name your project:

1 Select File – Save As. This opens the Save As dialog. Select the directory you wish

to save the project in and type in the desired name.

2 Select Save to confirm the project creation.

Creating the Menus

For this tutorial step we will create two menus. The first will be the opening title menu, and
the second will contain buttons linking to Chapter Points in the movie.
Creating the First Menu

1 Select the Backgrounds tab in the Media Gallery. This displays the backgrounds in

this Style Gallery you have to choose from.

2 Select one of the backgrounds and drag it onto the Work Area.

You now have the first menu's background. At any time, you can drag a different
background onto the Work Area to replace the current one. You can also just double-click on
a background to make it the current menu's background.
Note that the background also appears in the first slot of the Menu Gallery. The gray
rectangle with the crosshairs has moved to the right – it is the location of the next menu.
Creating the Second Menu

1 Select a different background from the Media Gallery and drag it to the gray rectangle

on the Menu Gallery. You can also hold the keyboard's Ctrl button and double-click a
background to make it the next menu.
