Basic File Settings

Create a new file with the following settings:

Image Size – Set the Height and Width to the largest size you expect to use the button
within SpruceUp projects, typically at least 200 pixels for one of the dimensions (SpruceUp
can resize the image, but it’s best to match the actual size you intend to use in your titles if
possible). The background layer needs to fit the size you choose. Set the resolution to 72
pixels/inch, and the mode to RGB color.
Contents – Select Transparent as the contents.
SpruceUp requires the file to be a .PSD type with 1 to 4 layers, depending on what sort of
button you wish to create. The layers must be named as follows:

• Background
• Mask
• Subpicture

• Thumbnail

The order of the layers is not important. It also does not matter whether they are visible or
not.

Background

The Background layer is the visible part of the button. It may have a simple single color fill
or may be from a photo. You can also use textures, with the Mask controlling the shape of
the button.

Important: Effects applied to the background layer (or any of the

other layers as well) are not processed by SpruceUp.

Mask

The Mask layer defines what part of the Background layer is visible. It uses RGB black
(0/0/0) to define the part of the Background layer to keep – white and transparent indicate
areas to mask. Using values between black and white is not supported and produces odd
effects.

Tip: Avoid making the Mask exactly the same size and shape as the

Background - the edges can improve if the Mask is a little bit smaller than
the Background.

Subpicture

The Subpicture defines which areas of the Background should be highlighted or darkened
