SpruceUp User’s Guide

GOP Pattern
Larger GOP patterns produce more efficient encodes, with B- and P-frames being much
smaller than I-frames. A typical pattern is IBBP with a length of 15 frames. The actual GOP
pattern used in this case would be BBIBBPBBPBBPBBP.
Open or Closed GOPs
An open GOP allows the B-frames from one GOP to look at the reference frame from an
adjacent GOP. This is more efficient, but causes issues with multi-angle titles. A closed GOP
keeps all references within itself - it stands alone with respect to other GOPs. SpruceUp
works with either type.

Supported Video Formats

Following is a list of extensions SpruceUp looks for when importing movies. These are all
MPEG compressed files – applications tend to choose file extension variations as best suits
them.

• .m1v
• .m2v
• .mpv

• .vbs
• .mpg
• .mpe
• .mpeg

• .mp2
• .m2p
• .avi (MPEG only)

What Happens Exactly When Importing Video?

As opposed to backgrounds and buttons, video movies are not copied to the Style Gallery –
they are used where they are. Video MPEG files must be parsed while being imported, and a
file with the same name is created, with an added ".PRV" extension. This small file is written
to the same folder that contains the MPEG file. Additionally, a ".PRA" file is created for audio
files. Because of this parsed file, SpruceUp cannot import video files directly from read-only
sources (CD-ROMs for example) – copy these to a read/write volume to make them
accessible.

Note: Parsing can take several minutes for longer movies. Due to

the amount of processing required, pressing Cancel while importing a
movie will not instantly stop the import. SpruceUp continues until the
current movie is done and then stops the import.

SpruceUp verifies the MPEG file is DVD compliant and monitors it for errors while parsing.
Any problems encountered are reported as error messages. Typical problems involve non-
compliant files – 44.1Khz audio and inappropriate video bit-rates and aspect ratios are the
most common errors. Check the transcode settings used when the file was converted and
correct any that are improper.
SpruceUp creates a thumbnail video frame, based on the first frame of video, and uses that
to display the movie within the Movies tab of the Media Gallery. See the Clip Properties topic
