SpruceUp User’s Guide

Quickstart

The following provides a guide for those who wish to start using SpruceUp without spending
a lot of time reading manuals or going through the tutorial. (The tutorial takes about 20
minutes to complete.)
The following assumes you will use the SpruceUp-provided default backgrounds and
buttons, and either your own MPEG movie or the tutorial movie you can download (if not
already installed on your system). To use your own assets, make sure you have the right
types available before you start. See the Assets topic for details. Visit:
http://www.spruceuserforums.com/SpruceUp

for information on downloading additional assets and the tutorial movie. See the Main
Window
topic for general information on the SpruceUp window.

Creating a Simple Title

Start a New Project
The following assumes you are starting a new project. If anything is displayed in the Menu
Gallery (other than a default gray rectangle) then a project is already underway and needs
to be closed. Select File then New to start a new project. SpruceUp asks if you want to
save changes to the current project - click No if you don't need to or Yes to save the
current status.
Loading Background and Movie Assets
To display the default or tutorial backgrounds and buttons, click on the file cabinet icon at
the top of the Media Gallery. Press the

button to browse to the DefaultStyle or

TutorialStyle directory, typically located in the C:\Program
Files\SpruceTechnologies\SpruceUp
directory.
Load other backgrounds and buttons, as well as movies, by:

1 Right-clicking anywhere in the gallery and selecting Add Media Asset.
2 Using the Import dialog to locate and select the file(s).

3 Selecting Open to add them to the Media Gallery.

SpruceUp processes the file(s) as necessary, determining whether they are backgrounds,
buttons, or movies, then shows them as thumbnails in the gallery's display. See the Import
Window
topic for details.
Select the Opening Menu Background
Select a background from the Media Gallery and simply drag it to the Work Area, or
alternatively you can just double-click on it. It fills the Work Area and appears as a
thumbnail in the Menu Gallery at the bottom of the window. Create the next menu by either
dragging a background directly to the gray rectangle in the Menu Gallery or holding down
the keyboard's Ctrl button and double-clicking on the background. (Dragging a background
to an existing menu replaces the current background.) See the Creating Menus topic for
details.
