SpruceUp User’s Guide

What Happens During an Export?

This topic explains a bit about what actually happens when you press the Write button and
start the export. The actual actions depend on the Output To setting. The following
sections cover each setting.

Output To: CD-R/RW or DVD-R

This option is available whenever SpruceUp detects a drive on the system it can write
directly to. SpruceUp starts by compiling the title set and writing it to the Working
Directory. Any items selected in the Includes section are also written to the Working
Directory. SpruceUp displays a progress bar while compiling.

Once the compile is finished, SpruceUp takes a look at the CD-R/RW or DVD-R drive to see
if suitable media is present. If there is, then it continues with the export, copying the files
from the Working Directory to the disc. If no disc is present, or the disc is not blank,
SpruceUp opens the drawer and displays a message asking for a blank disc to be inserted.

Important: Do not manually close the disc drawer after you place the

disc in it. Click on OK in the dialog to close the drawer.

The Auto Insert Notification

In most cases, when a CD-R/RW drive is installed on a system, it is setup to automatically
detect a blank disc being inserted, and to display its own dialog for formatting and copying
to the disc. SpruceUp requires any discs it writes to to be blank and totally under its control.
As mentioned previously, once SpruceUp gets to the point of actually writing to the disc
during the export, it looks at the drive to see if there is a blank disc inserted. If there is no
disc inserted, or the disc is not blank, then SpruceUp ejects it and displays a dialog asking
for a proper disc.
Once you place a disc in the drawer and select OK in SpruceUp's export dialog, the drawer
closes. If the drive's Auto Insert Notification is enabled (as is typically the case), then a
dialog from the drive's application appears, asking if you would like to format the disc. You
must cancel this dialog so that SpruceUp can have control of the drive.

Note: Due to the wide variety of applications used to write to discs,

it is not possible to explain each in detail. Please consult the
documentation supplied with your CD-writing software for details.

Should this become a problem, you should disable the drive's auto insert notification.
