Export the Title

The final step is to export the title by writing it to a DVD-R drive (for playback in set-top
DVD players and computer-based DVD-ROM drives), to a CD-R/RW drive (for computer-
based playback in most DVD-ROM and CD-ROM drives), to a DLT (Digital Linear Tape) drive
for mass-replication, or to your hard drive.
The title can be configured with the Syzygy DVD player. Adding the Syzygy player allows
the title to play in most Windows-based PCs equipped with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive.
The player loads in software only - nothing is written to the system’s hard drive. See the
Export Interface topic for details on exporting.

Set-Top DVD Players

It is a typical goal of a DVD title that it be playable in the average set-top DVD player.

In addition to mass-replicated DVD discs, most current set-top DVD players can play discs
from a DVD-R drive. Older players may not play these discs, or may play the 3.95 GB discs
but not the 4.7 GB versions.

Most set-top DVD players can also play audio CDs, but almost all except the very latest will
reject a disk from a CD-R/RW drive, no matter what is on it.
This means that the current foolproof method of making a DVD title that is playable on all
set-top DVD players is to mass-replicate it. This requires you to export to a DLT (Digital
Linear Tape) drive (since this is the only format replicators currently accept) and send it to a
mass-replicator.
The other option is to export to a DVD-R drive and try out the disc on the players you wish
to use.

Playing Titles on PCs

Most PCs with only a CD-ROM or CD-R/RW drive do not have DVD player software or
hardware. It is for these systems that the Syzygy DVD player is intended. These systems
can typically play CD-R/RW discs, but not any form DVD discs.
PCs with DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, and other versions of DVD drive can typically play
most DVD discs, including DVD-R, and most CD-R/RW discs. These systems also typically
have DVD player software included.
See the DVD Media Basics topic for details on the various media types.

The Syzygy Player

Even on systems that already have DVD player software, the Syzygy player may be worth
using since it works well with WebDVD™ titles, with links entered in the URL field of a
movie's Chapter Points and a menu's buttons.
There are a lot of factors that determine whether a PC will be able to play a title using the
Syzygy player. Following is a list of general requirements:

• Windows' 98SE, Millennium (ME), NT 4.0, and 2000 operating systems
• Intel CPU with MMX, or AMD CPU with 3Dnow!

• 8X (read) CD-ROM or faster
– – or – –
• 2nd Generation or Newer DVD-ROM Drive
• AGP Graphics Card (PCI may perform up to 30% slower) with Hardware Overlay
