Creating a DVD Title Overview

This topic provides general information on what is involved in creating a DVD title. We’ve
broken the process into six steps.

Gather Your Sources

SpruceUp uses three different source types: Movies, Backgrounds, and Buttons.

Movies

Movies contain the video and audio that make up the bulk of a DVD title. Generally, VCRs
and camcorders supply the content. These movies must be DVD compliant MPEG encoded to
be used with SpruceUp (see the Encode for SpruceUp step). They also must match your
video standard – NTSC or PAL. See the Video Standards of the World topic to determine
your format.

Backgrounds

Backgrounds are still video images used when creating menus. SpruceUp can grab
backgrounds from a movie or you can create your own. SpruceUp directly imports TIFF
(non-compressed), JPEG, and BMP files. Common sources are digital cameras or film
pictures converted to digital, and scanned photos or artwork. As with movies, the video
standard must be taken into account. See the Background Assets topic for details.

Note: Adobe Photoshop files (.PSD extension) are assumed to be

buttons. To use a Photoshop file as a background you need to use its Save
a Copy
function and save as a flattened (single layer) TIFF, BMP, or JPEG
file.

Buttons

Buttons come in two types: Solid and Thumbnail Frame.
Solid buttons look the same no matter what is assigned to them. They rely on their shape
(an arrow for example) or text typed next to them to indicate what happens when they are
pushed.
Thumbnail Frame buttons have a window that displays the video thumbnail frame of the
asset or menu assigned to them. This provides a visual indication of what pushing the
button does.
SpruceUp supplies a set of buttons and includes a button-making tool for creating simple
custom buttons. You can also make custom buttons using Adobe Photoshop – SpruceUp
directly imports multi-layer PSD files. See the Creating Buttons topic for details.
