Author the Title

Authoring your DVD title can be a very quick process, involving simply loading an asset or
two and creating a simple menu, or it can be the longest and most creative part of creating
the title, using multiple menus and movies with links to specific scenes and even to web
pages.
The first step is to load your assets (MPEG movies, backgrounds, and buttons). See the
Assets topic for details.
Next you need to create your menus. Menus allow the viewer to choose what they want to
see – as the author, you assign links to buttons, providing the choices. A button can play an
entire movie or take you to a specific Chapter Point in a movie or to a different menu
providing even more choices. A button can even launch a web browser and display a
specified web site.
Create a menu by:

• Selecting a still background, either from a supported file format or by using the Clip

Properties to grab a frame from a movie, then dragging it onto the Work Area.

• Adding buttons to it using either the provided SpruceUp buttons, simple buttons

created with the Button Maker tool, or buttons you create on your own.

• Adding links to the buttons, either to movies, other menus, or URLs.
• Typing text on the menu. SpruceUp includes a titler for typing and formatting text on

menus. Use this to add text to your menus, including menu titles and naming buttons.

See the Background Assets and Button Assets topics for more information on backgrounds
and buttons. See the Creating Menus topic for details on building menus.

Simulate the Title

SpruceUp has the ability to simulate your project, either once you are finished or while you
are building it. Use this as an error checking and proofing tool to verify playback and
navigation. It allows you to verify menu and button functionality before committing the title
to disc. It is very easy to build traps into a title – places where a viewer can go but has no
obvious way out. See the Simulation topic for details.

Warning: Do not have other DVD players (including the Syzygy

player) running on your system while in Simulation mode. This causes
conflicts within the system.

Do not confuse Simulation with Emulation. Simulation works with a title prior to it being
compiled, whereas Emulation uses the DVD player on your system to verify the compiled
title prior to burning a disc. This requires you to export a video title set.
