SCSI Issues

SpruceUp can be very demanding of the SCSI bus during write operations. Writing a title to
disc requires a predictable steady data transfer - any problems cause the process to abort.

This topic covers some of the more common issues systems with SCSI drives may face.
There are three primary concerns of SCSI you should be aware of:

• Cable quality

• Cable length
• Termination

Cable quality is real big issue. Make sure that cable is a high quality "beefy" one. Using
"skinny" cheaper cables tends to lead to inconsistent operations and various problems.

Cable length is a large issue as well - the shorter the cable the better. If this is the only
device on the SCSI bus, the total cable length should be no more than 3 meters. However,
if there are other fast devices on the same SCSI bus, cable length should be reduced to a
total of 1.5 meters (don't forget to account for the cable within the PC).

Properly terminating your SCSI bus is just as important as cable quality and length. Use the
proper terminator type, passive or active, as required by your SCSI card and the other
devices.

If reliability is still a problem, consider reducing the transfer rate. Consult the
documentation that came with your SCSI card and other drives for details.
