Export Issues

This topic covers known issues and problems with exporting SpruceUp projects.

CD-R and CD-RW Media

A primary use of SpruceUp is to write titles to CD-R and CD-RW discs. Due to their wide
availability and relatively low cost, CDs can be very attractive for distributing smaller titles.
There are two drawbacks to these discs: They can only hold 650 to 700MB and they cannot
play in most set-top DVD players.
Almost all PCs, including Macs with DVD player software, can play titles from CD-R discs.
CD-RW discs however, are much less likely to be readable. Keep this is mind when choosing
your media.
CD-R discs must be blank and unformatted. CD-RW discs must be erased – SpruceUp
prompts you to erase the disc if it detects data already on it.

DVD-RAM and DVD+RW

DVD-RAM and DVD+RW drives act differently than CD-R and DVD-R drives, and so must be
exported to in a different way. These drives do not appear in the Output To selection of the
Export dialog, since they cannot be controlled directly by SpruceUp. Instead, these drives
act more like additional hard drives than removable media drives, and that is how they need
to be treated when exporting to them.

Creating Simple Title Sets

When all you want to do is create a simple video title, choose Title Set in the Output To
selection and set the Output Destination Folder Path to the root of the DVD-RAM/RW
drive. SpruceUp will write the Video_ts and Audio_ts folders there, including the title set
files. By writing to the root of the disc, most PC DVD players should be able to play the title
set.

Creating DVD-ROM Discs

Creating a title including items from the Includes section of the Export dialog's Advanced
display requires a bit of effort. Choosing Title Set in the Output To selection does not
enable the Includes section. You must either manually copy the items, using the procedure
outlined in the Manually Copying Files to CD-R topic or choose Disc Image in the Output
To
selection.
The disc image file created with the Disc Image setting is not actually what you want to
write to the disc. However, selecting Disc Image does enable the Includes section. When
creating the disc image file, SpruceUp copies all files involved, including those identified in
the Includes section, to the Working Directory specified in the Advanced display. Setting
the Working Directory to the DVD-RAM/RW drive causes the title set and the Includes
settings to all be written to the DVD-RAM/RW disc. The disc image file is not actually
needed, and in fact, you can cancel the export once SpruceUp says it is starting to write the
disc image.
The drawback of this is that, unless you cancel when the disc image starts writing, you end
up with twice as much disc space written to as is necessary, and have to wait about twice as
long as needed.

Video and Audio Quality

It is important to understand that SpruceUp does not affect the quality of movies that you
import - it simply "muxes" it into the .vob files that make up the video title set.
The one area where SpruceUp can affect the quality of the title is with imported
