SECTION 2 - OPERATION
2-138
BALLASTING FRONT END FOR
TRANSPORT
CAUTION
Additional front ballast may be needed when
transporting large 3-point hitch mounted equip-
ment.
Always drive slowly over rough terrain, no matter
how much front ballast is used.
Add front end ballast when it is needed for stability
and steering control. Never allow the tractor to
operate with the front wheels off the ground.
Tractor front end ballast may not always maintain
satisfactory stability if the tractor is operated at high
speed on rough or hilly terrain. Reduce speed and
exercise caution under these conditions.
BALLASTING TWO-WHEEL DRIVE
TRACTORS
The best tractor weight split is 30% on the front axle
and 70% on the rear axle to achieve 10%-15% wheel
slip.
Two types of front end cast iron weights are available
to ballast the front of the tractor.
195
BALLASTING FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
TRACTORS
Ideal tire slippage for FWD tractors is 8-12%. To
reduce tire slippage to this level, more weight is
needed on the front than two-wheel drive tractors.
The best weight split is 40% front, 60% rear, of total
tractor weight. Ballast may be needed in the front
tires to obtain this weight split.
