The general equation for a
parabola is:
Y = aX

When the parabola describes a
vertical curve in an alignment:
Y
= The elevation above datum of
a point on the vertical curve;
X
= The horizontal distance from
the beginning of the vertical
curve;
a
= One half of the rate of change
of slope in the vertical curve;
b
= The slope of the vertical
alignment, as a decimal
fraction (not percent), at the
beginning of the vertical curve,
and;
c
= The elevation above datum at
the beginning of the vertical
curve.
Therefore, the "p" parameter may
also be expressed as:
p = ½a
Elevation
The Elevation or Z ordinate at the
beginning of the element.
